I will argue, however, that academic psychologists have repressed the philosophical, spiritual, and religious heritage of science and Psychology, much of which, if uncovered and embraced, could enhance the development of psychological knowledge about human nature and about life enhancing therapeutic interventions.Given the current rise in popularity of religion and spirituality in the professions and sciences, it is important that I define certain key terms. My definitions are drawn from a variety of sources, especially Joel Kovel (1991) and Andrew Samuels (2002).By “religion” I mean an ideological and organizational system of belief, ritual, and ethics centred on some notion of transcendence.
